Lent is the perfect time — and a retreat is a perfect place — to “put on spiritual armor and battle with ourselves and our inclination to selfishness and original sin.”

“Not only is [the Lenten season] a time to celebrate the Lord’s passion, but it can be a time to make a transformational change in your own life,”

“It is taking time to reflect on where your life is at present, and perhaps choices you’ve made and how they fit it with your spiritual goals.”

But whether it’s for just a morning, or an entire weekend, Catholics will find in these mini-retreats an opportunity to deepen — or widen — their spiritual life.

Holy Lord, who sent your only Son to save us, I pray today to be reconciled to you. For if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new has come. I pray to live in Christ, to let go of my worldly desires and instead follow where Jesus leads. May I be made new in Christ, to be reconciled to you, O Father, and be forgiven of my sins through your great mercy and grace. Amen.

2 Corinthians 5:16-21 (NIV)

From now onwards, then, we will not consider anyone by human standards: even if we were once familiar with Christ according to human standards, we do not know him in that way any longer.

¹⁷ So for anyone who is in Christ, there is a new creation: the old order is gone and a new being is there to see.

¹⁸ It is all God’s work; he reconciled us to himself through Christ and he gave us the ministry of reconciliation.

¹⁹ I mean, God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not holding anyone’s faults against them, but entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.

²⁰ So we are ambassadors for Christ; it is as though God were urging you through us, and in the name of Christ we appeal to you to be reconciled to God.

²¹ For our sake he made the sinless one a victim for sin, so that in him we might become the uprightness of God.
